SENTENCE RE ARRANGEMENT

What is Sentence Rearrangement?

  • Sentence Rearrangement questions require you to arrange given parts of a sentence or multiple sentences into a coherent, logical, and grammatically correct order.
  • Usually, a sentence is split into 4-6 parts (labeled A, B, C, D, etc.).
  • Your task is to find the correct sequence that forms a meaningful sentence or paragraph.

Types of Sentence Rearrangement Questions

  1. Single Sentence Rearrangement
    • Rearrange parts of a single sentence.
    • Focus on grammar, syntax, and logical flow.
  2. Paragraph Rearrangement
    • Rearrange sentences to form a meaningful paragraph.
    • Pay attention to the flow of ideas and coherence.
  3. Sentence Completion + Rearrangement
    • Sometimes you need to complete a sentence or fill in gaps while rearranging.

Key Strategies to Solve Sentence Rearrangement

1. Identify the Starting Sentence

  • Usually starts with a subject, introductory word, or an article (A, An, The).
  • Look for sentences that introduce the topic or start with a capitalized proper noun.

2. Find the Linking Words and Connectors

  • Look for conjunctions like and, but, because, although, however, therefore.
  • Transitional phrases such as on the other hand, in addition, as a result help in linking sentences.

3. Look for Pronoun References

  • Identify pronouns (he, she, it, they) and find their antecedents.
  • This helps you decide which sentence follows another.

4. Maintain Logical and Chronological Flow

  • Follow cause-effect, problem-solution, or time sequence patterns.

5. Check Grammar and Syntax

  • Subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and correct prepositions help in finalizing the sequence.

Common Clues and Tips

  • Sentences with general statements or introductions often start.
  • Sentences with conclusions or summaries often come at the end.
  • Sentences with details, examples, or explanations are usually in the middle.
  • Look for punctuation clues like commas, semicolons, or dashes that show sentence breaks or continuations.

Example

Given:

(B) After completing his schooling,
(C) because he wanted to help people.

  • D gives more detail about his passion.

Practice Tips

  • Practice with previous SSC, UPSC, and banking exam papers.
  • Read newspapers or editorials to understand flow and structure.
  • Practice grouping sentences based on theme or idea.
  • Time yourself to improve speed and accuracy.

Important for Exams

  • Sentence rearrangement tests your grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • A strong command over basic grammar rules helps.
  • Focus on understanding the meaning rather than memorizing.
